Eli Lilly is milking cancer
Sep 28th, 2009 by Nate

Our friend Barbara Brenner over at Breast Cancer Action tipped us off about some despicable things going on at the pharmaceutical corporation Eli Lilly.  You may know Eli Lilly as the producer of cancer drugs, or you might know them as the sole manufacturer of rBGH, the artificial growth hormone given to dairy cows that has been linked to cancer.  Well, now that Barbara has clued us in on Eli Lilly’s neat little profit circle, we need to let everyone know.  And most importantly, we need to let Eli Lilly know that the jig is up.  Breast Cancer Action has a message prepared for people to send to Eli Lilly.  Just type in your name and information (the internet version of signing a petition) and Eli Lilly will get an email telling them that yet another person doesn’t want them manufacturing rBGH.

Carnitas!

Carnitas are delicious.  The pork, the onions, the chiles, all wrapped up in a handy tortilla so you can tote it around in front of your jealous friends.  Want one of these babies for yourself?  Look no further, pilgrim.  Scot Nakagawa, on his wonderful blog, has told us how to make your own.  The Secret is out.

Slow Food USA’s Time for Lunch Eat-In in Williamsburg
Sep 11th, 2009 by Nate

On Labor Day, we were over in Williamsburg, NYC at Slow Food’s Time for Lunch Eat-In, and it was awesome.  Slow Food USA did Eat-Ins on Labor Day all across the country, people brought potluck lunches and signed Slow Food USA’s petition about the Child Nutrition Act reauthorization.  At our chapter in Williamsburg we screened What’s On Your Plate? for everyone that showed up.  It was great, but don’t take our word for it: Michelle Grey Campion over at The Epi-Cure wrote an article about it.  Thanks, Michelle!

The Obama’s Kitchen Garden!
Sep 10th, 2009 by Mary

We meant to post this earlier last week when we saw it, but since Michael Pollan’s article reminded us, we wanted to say hurrah to the Obama’s on such great leadership in practice on the White House grounds.

Michael Pollan does it again!

When health insurers can no longer evade much of the cost of treating the collateral damage of the American diet, the movement to reform the food system — everything from farm policy to food marketing and school lunches — will acquire a powerful and wealthy ally, something it hasn’t really ever had before.
