Organic Farmers Really Rotate Our Crops!
Nov 9th, 2009 by Nate

Over at What’s On Your Plate? HQ, we’ve known for a while now that organic farming is sexy, exciting stuff and it looks like that revelation has been making its way into brains and blogs all across this great nation.  So it was really just a matter of time before organic farmers became the teen idols of the internet age, right?  And thanks to the Huffington Post, you can now rate those sustainable dreamboats with the click of a mouse!

Monsanto said WHAT?
Nov 9th, 2009 by Nate

Ah, Monsanto.  If there’s any multinational corporation out there that really cares about the environment, farmers’ rights, and sustainability, it’s… wait, what?!  We’re talking about Monsanto here.  The company that brought us Bovine Growth Hormone, Terminator Seeds, and Agent Orange.  If I didn’t know any better, I’d say the board members were actual Captain Planet villains.  But they nearly had us all fooled with this ad.

Producing more. Conserving more. Improving farmers’ lives. That’s sustainable agriculture. And that’s what Monsanto is all about.”

It sounds awfully convincing, but with Monsanto’s history of destructive products and practices, nothing could be convincing enough.  So we’re joining up with Vandana Shiva and the Center for Food Safety (CFS) to fight advertising slogans with facts.  Over the next month, CFS will be putting videos up on their website from food experts like Michael Pollan, and Anna Lappe.  They’ve already got one up from Vandana Shiva.  Check ‘em out.  Sustainable agriculture is absolutely vital to our future, but the first step toward sustainability must be that farmers no longer depend on destructive companies like Monsanto, but are able to hold them accountable for their actions and make sure that agri-business works for farmers, not the other way around.

Sweden takes a good look at its footprints.
Nov 6th, 2009 by Nate

It turns out that governments don’t have to completely ignore food issues.  Sweden is taking food labeling seriously, a bold and excellent move, in our opinion.  The Swedish government has started labeling the carbon footprint on food packages.  With food coming to our plates from all over the globe, those footprints can be huge, even for tiny foods.  Informing consumers about the major systems that bring food to their plates is something every government should do.  The system has been working well: food that gets a seal of approval from the labeling system has been selling much better since the system went into effect.  But the labels are still a bit vague.  It’s one thing to label something “.87kg of CO2 per kg of product” but that doesn’t mean people will completely understand what a carbon footprint is, or how eating food with a smaller footprint is a good idea.  Still, Sweden’s model, and its commitment to informing consumers about ramifications of the foods they eat, is a lot better than the ridiculous “Healthy Choice” labels on some American foods.
