Great blog! Just found you today through a facebook friend. Keep up the fine work!
I am working hard to teach any kid that will listen how to grow food without any pesticides and to watch the bugs because they are cool and many are beneficial. And trying to spread the word about the nasty chemicals we spread over gazillions of lawns all over the US! Have you seen A Chemical Reaction? Excellent documentary about a tiny town called Hudson and a dermatologist in Canada that decided lawn chemicals *might* be harmful and banned them to protect its citizens from possible harm. (not to mention the bees!) Now all over Canada they are banned. Amazing what one person can do. I now work for a lady who has been landscaping organically for her clients for over 30 years and teaches to all. www.naturework.com

This is Matt the beekeeper:
Great article guys!
The bees thank you :-)
Dont forget that beekeepers also put a variety of chemicals in beehives which are also not good for bees or people. Likewise many chemicals from commercial agg. can also concentrate in beehives. So when you buy honey buy it from the beekeeper and ask if chemicals, sugar feeding and high heat are used in the production of the honey...

Thanks again and all the best to you!

Hey Jessie,

I posed this question to COMFOOD -- which is a great list serve run by the Community Food Security Coalition -- and got tons of responses. It doesn't seem like any of them are nation-wide, but they are spread out all over the country. Here's the list:

1. The Food Project, in Boston MA has a "Build-a-Garden" program they started in 2007, working to build raised bed gardens for residents and organizations.

2. GRUB (Garden Raised Urban Bounty), in Olympia WA, runs the "kitchen garden program" throughout Thurston and Mason Counties.

3. Growing Places Garden Project in Clinton, MA

4. City Harvest Growers Alliance in Philadelphia, PA

5. Biggest Little Garden in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada

6. Minnesota State Horticulture Society has a program called Garden-in-a-box.

7. In Oregon: The Home Gardening Project Foundation's entire mission is to provide raised bed gardens to people in need.

8. The City Slicker Farms (Oakland, CA)

9. Collective Roots in East Palo Alto, CA

10. Slow food Miami has a great program that helps over 40 schools with garden projects

11. The Victory Garden Initiative

12. Growing Gardens, Portland OR

Hope this helps!

I'm so worried about the direction our love ones are headed in nowadays. Watching Jamie Olivers food revolution on tv scared the thingies out of me. I suggest we all start cooking some healthy recipe like these at home if we're going to fix this horrible situation. The ones on that site seem pretty easy, I tried last night and it's the first time my family has eaten healthy in ages, I just feel wonderful.
