Ah, Monsanto. If there’s any multinational corporation out there that really cares about the environment, farmers’ rights, and sustainability, it’s… wait, what?! We’re talking about Monsanto here. The company that brought us Bovine Growth Hormone, Terminator Seeds, and Agent Orange. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say the board members were actual Captain Planet villains. But they nearly had us all fooled with this ad.
“Producing more. Conserving more. Improving farmers’ lives. That’s sustainable agriculture. And that’s what Monsanto is all about.”
It sounds awfully convincing, but with Monsanto’s history of destructive products and practices, nothing could be convincing enough. So we’re joining up with Vandana Shiva and the Center for Food Safety (CFS) to fight advertising slogans with facts. Over the next month, CFS will be putting videos up on their website from food experts like Michael Pollan, and Anna Lappe. They’ve already got one up from Vandana Shiva. Check ’em out. Sustainable agriculture is absolutely vital to our future, but the first step toward sustainability must be that farmers no longer depend on destructive companies like Monsanto, but are able to hold them accountable for their actions and make sure that agri-business works for farmers, not the other way around.
