Last week, we blogged about the New York City Department of Education’s decision to take unhealthy vending machines out of city schools. On Friday, the New York Times came out with a more extensive article about the DOE’s policy to improve food in NYC schools. The title might be a little bit scary, and it is true that bake sales are being banned in city schools (with a few exceptions for after school events and the PTA), but it really is a huge step forward that the DOE is willing to confront the food that schools feed kids. Take a few minutes to read the regulations themselves, and check out the NYC health department’s survey on childhood obesity. Bake sales are going to be a lot to let go of, but personally, I’d be just fine buying a t-shirt to support my local soccer team, there are only so many rice crispy treats I can take.
And remember, this kind of change is what happens when people make their opinions heard! The DOE would never have taken such bold steps if there weren’t concerned New Yorkers who Took Action!
